My (Actually) Picky Toddler’s Breakfast Rotation

I’m not sure what other people’s definition of picky is but every time I’d search for help feeding picky toddlers, the recommendations just made me laugh. Halved grapes with a side of overnight flaxseed berry oats? Coconut flour apple pie muffins? Seriously people? I’m already losing my mind running around my kitchen trying to think of things I can feed my daughter that aren’t bread and cheese.

So for the mom’s with actually picky toddlers, I hope this post is a help. This is my toddler’s breakfast rotation and we even have these combinations for lunch and dinner when nothing else will suffice…

Quick rant: I used to get so stressed about my daughter eating “healthy enough” when I’d see toddlers eating eating plenty of vegetables, fruits and homemade organic meals. My guilt and anxiety would build realizing that I’d fed my daughter a quesadilla for three nights in a row. But, I just want to remind us all that there are countries where children are eating rice for their one meal of the day. We have so much excess here in America that sometimes we lose perspective (preaching to myself here). Yes, it’s important to keep our children healthy but we are so fortunate to even have food to feed them. Choice is a luxury. Remember that a lot of this toddler behavior is a phase. Don’t keep wasting money, time and mental health, planning and cooking healthy toddler food that ends up on the floor. At the end of the day, your nurturing is the most important ‘food’ you give them. Take a breath, give yourself grace and try not to stress out about their pickiness. They’ll get there eventually. In the meantime, buy what you know they will eat.

The tried and true’s are as follows:


  1. Kashi Blueberry Waffles (I also buy the whole wheat Nutri-Grain Eggo waffles sometimes)
  2. Banana (Sometimes she’ll eat the whole thing alone, sometimes I mush up half and mix it in with the oatmeal and some peanut butter)
  3. Quaker Lower Sugar Instant Oatmeal (Maple & Brown Sugar)
  4. Stonyfield Organic Yo Baby Whole Milk Yogurt (the peach & pear flavors are my daughter’s favorite, they also have banana & mango and blueberry & apple)
  5. Sourdough bread (peanut butter toast or buttered toast).
  6. Justin’s Peanut Butter (included because I put this on toast, waffles and mix a spoonful into oatmeal and yogurt for a little extra protein).
  7. Breakfast pouches (my favorites are from Plum organics).

Combine and mix for variety.  My daughter actually had peanut butter oatmeal for dinner tonight!
